You complete your retraining with the retraining examination. This provides proof of your professional competence in a specific occupation.

The retraining takes place on the basis of a recognized training occupation. It ends, just like vocational training, with a final examination. This final examination for retraining is called a retraining examination.

As a rule, you conclude a retraining contract and then take part in the regular final examination for this occupation. A separate retraining examination is offered by some training providers, but is not the rule.

A retraining examination is conducted by the bodies responsible for training in your occupation at the end of the retraining period. Before you can take part in the retraining examination, you must have completed the retraining course in full.

Your retraining contract has been notified to the competent body by the retraining company. The competent body conducts the retraining examination together with the examination board. The examination board will examine and assess your examination performance. Your retraining ends when you receive the results from the examination board. If you fail the retraining examination, you have the opportunity to retake the examination twice.

Retraining examinations are subject to a fee. The examination fee is based on the respective fee regulations of the regionally responsible body. The examination fees due are paid by the training company or educational institution with which you have concluded a retraining contract.

You must plan your participation in a retraining examination in advance and prepare well.

• You may be notified of the upcoming examination in advance by the responsible body. As a rule, you still have to register for the examination
• To register, complete the application form and submit it to the relevant office together with the required documents.
• Once your overall result has been determined by the examination board, it will be sent to the relevant office.
• Once you have passed the examination, your examination certificate will be sent to you.

The entire retraining examination procedure, including registration, admission, invitation, completion of all parts of the examination, determination of results and issue of the examination certificate, takes approximately 6 months.

The registration deadline for the retraining examination is approximately 4 to 5 months before the written examination date. You can find out the exact registration deadline from your regional office.

By successfully passing the retraining examination, you will achieve an educational qualification at level 4 of the German Qualifications Framework. The examination procedure can only be conducted in German.

Contact the chamber responsible for your vocational training. This can be

• the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for vocational training in non-trade occupations,
• the Chamber of Skilled Crafts for vocational training in professions under the Crafts Code,
• the Chamber of Agriculture for vocational training in agricultural and rural domestic science professions
• the Chamber of Lawyers, Patent Attorneys and Notaries as well as the Notary's Office for the vocational training of specialists in the field of law,
• the Chamber of Auditors and the Chamber of Tax Consultants for the vocational training of professionals in the field of auditing and tax consultancy,
• the Chambers of Physicians, Dentists, Veterinarians and Pharmacists for the vocational training of healthcare professionals.

There are other competent bodies, for example for bodies in the area of public law and the churches.
