If you wish to use road transport vehicles for the long-distance transportation of animals, you must apply for approval from the competent authority. You can find out more here.

If you want to use means of transport, such as truck trailers, car trailers or semi-trailers, for long journeys of animals, you need to obtain prior approval for the transportation of animals from both the motor vehicle authorities and the competent veterinary authorities. This only applies to transportation that takes 8 hours or longer or, in the case of breeding and farm animals, that takes longer than 12 hours within Germany and is connected with a commercial activity.

Transportation includes the entire transport process from the place of dispatch to the place of destination, including loading, unloading and, if necessary, accommodation at intermediate stations.

• TÜV-certified acceptance report of the navigation system (or DEKRA etc.)

• Declaration that you or your representative have not applied for approval from any other competent authority in Germany or a member state
• Proof of previous registration, if applicable
• Identity document

If you want to transport animals commercially for more than 8 hours, you need to obtain approval for the means of transport used in accordance with the EU Animal Welfare Transport Regulation before starting work.

Is based on the respective administrative fee schedule of the federal state or on the fee statutes of the authorities responsible under federal state law.

After you have submitted the documents, these and the road vehicle will be checked by the competent authority. If all the necessary requirements are met, you will receive your license.

Once you have submitted all the documents in full, the responsible office will process them promptly.

You may only use the means of transport once you have received approval.
