For the European elections, you will be entered in the voters' register ex officio or upon application as a German or a German.
If you live in Germany as a German and would like to take part in the European elections, you must first be entered in the voters' register or have a polling card. Entry in the voters' register is either automatic ex officio or you must submit an application for this.
An application for entry in the voters' register must be submitted in writing no later than 21 days before the election. He must
- Surnames
- the first names,
- the date of birth,
- contain the exact address.
- The application must also be signed personally and by hand.
German voters are entered ex officio in the voters' register if, on the 42nd day before the election,
- for one dwelling, in the case of several dwellings, for their main residence,
- as a captain or
- as a crew member of a seagoing vessel flying the German flag, or
- as an inland waterway skipper of an inland waterway vessel entered in the German shipping register, or
- for a prison or similar institution in Germany
are reported.
Upon request, German voters will be added to the voters' register,
If you
- habitually reside in the Federal Republic of Germany without occupying a dwelling, or
- are in a prison without an ex officio registration.
If you can only be entered on the voters' register upon application, you will be entered as follows:
- You submit a written application to the municipality responsible for you no later than the 21st day before the election.
- The authority decides on the application and sends a voter's notification or a negative decision.
The application for entry on the voters' register must be submitted in writing to the competent authority no later than 21 days before the election.

- Germans within the meaning of Article 116 paragraph 1 of the Basic Law
- at least 18 years old on election day
- no exclusion from the right to vote
- main residence or sole residence in Germany or
- Captain or
- crew member for a seagoing vessel flying the German flag, or
- inland waterway skipper of an inland waterway vessel entered in the German shipping register, or
- as a relative or member of the corresponding household or
- registered at the address of a prison or similar institution in Germany
- upon request:
- Germans within the meaning of Article 116 paragraph 1 of the Basic Law
- at least 18 years old on election day
- no exclusion from the right to vote
- without a dwelling, but habitually resident in Germany or in a prison, without an ex officio registration
- responsible for application: municipality,
- in which you have an apartment,
- in which one usually stays,
- where the shipowner is established,
- which is the home town of the inland waterway vessel, or
- where the prison is located
The municipal or city administration of your place of residence (main residence) is responsible.
