If you would like to implement a project in the cultural sector in Hessen, you can receive a grant or scholarship under certain conditions.
As part of funding in the Hessian cultural sector, registered associations, gGmbHs, independent non-profit organizations, in individual cases other legal entities, independent and public organizations, cities and municipalities and, in designated cases, natural persons can apply for grants for projects or scholarships.
A project can include, for example, an event/series of events, an exhibition or similar. For detailed information and special regulations for individual programs or scholarships, please refer to the respective funding guidelines on the website for cultural funding of the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art.
The project must not have been started at the time of application, i.e. you must not enter into any financial commitment for the project before a grant is awarded. The project must be carried out and financially completed within one calendar year.
You must briefly describe the content of your planned project in the application, including all dates, locations and actors already known at the time of application. The application also includes a financing plan with all income and expenditure, which must be listed in detail by area.
As a rule, a grant for the planned project can be awarded up to a maximum of 50% of the total expenditure.
The application must be submitted at least 8 weeks before the start of the project (see above).
Once the project has been completed, you must submit a statement of account in the form of proof with a brief description of the course of the project and a list of all actual expenditure, including supporting documents if necessary.
- Description of the planned project in Hesse
- Financing plan
- Other sponsors of the project
- Notice of exemption
Please refer to the application form to find out which additional documents are required in your case.
You can only apply for funding for a project as a representative of a registered association based in Hessen, a gGmbH, an independent or public organization, a city or municipality or, in certain cases, as a natural person.
You can only apply for a scholarship as a natural person.
Please refer to the respective funding guidelines and information on the websites for any exceptions.
You can only apply for funding with a written application (online procedure possible):
- You are planning a project in the cultural sector in Hessen and would like to receive a grant or apply for a scholarship.
- Go to the website below, select the page for your funding area or funding program and read the relevant guidelines.
- If you have any further questions, please send them to the email address provided for the respective funding program.
- In this case, a member of staff will contact you and discuss everything you need to know.
- You prepare all the documents for the application and then complete the online application.
- You will receive a copy of the completed application for your records.
- The responsible office will check the application. If they have any queries, they will contact you.
- You may be asked to submit further documents.
- The responsible office will then check your application and, if necessary, forward it to the jury for a decision. Once the review or jury process has been completed, you will be informed whether and to what extent you will receive funding for your project.
- If the decision is positive, you will receive an official notification by post (notification of approval), if necessary with forms for the call for funds and the statement of account (proof of use).
- Read the general and special ancillary provisions in the notification carefully.
- You can now start the project.
- In order to receive the grant for project funding, fill out the call for funds form completely and send it to the responsible office. Only request as much money as you need for the next two months. Please note the information in the general terms and conditions.
- There are special regulations for individual funding or scholarship programs, which are communicated in the approval notice.
- If the project changes during implementation (financially and/or in terms of content), you must have these changes approved by the responsible office.
- Once the project has been completed, send the completed statement of expenditure form (proof of use) with a report on the project to the responsible office by the deadline (see approval notice).
- The responsible office will check the proof of use.
- If there are any discrepancies in the statement, a member of staff may contact you to clarify the issues.
- You will be notified once the check has been completed
Special case:
If, in an exceptional case, you need to start the project before you receive the official notification, you must obtain separate approval for this after submitting your application (approval for early start of measures).
Programs with jury decisions have fixed application deadlines, which are listed for the individual funding programs on the website listed below. The latest application deadline for all other programs is 8 weeks before the start of the project (the start of the project is when the first financial commitment is made as part of the project) and no later than mid-September for projects in the current calendar year.
An appeal against the approval notice may be lodged with the competent administrative court in writing or for the record within one month of notification.
