School attendance is compulsory for all children, adolescents and adolescents who have their domicile or habitual residence in Hesse. It begins on 01.08. for all children born up to and including 1 July and thus reach the age of six by 30 June. Children who reach the age of six after 30.06. of the same year can be admitted to school at the request of their parents. For them, compulsory schooling begins with school enrolment.
Compulsory schooling usually lasts 9 years and ends at the latest with the successful attendance of grade 9. Anyone who leaves general education after completing full-time compulsory schooling and enters into an apprenticeship becomes subject to vocational school attendance for the duration of the training. For young people who, after the end of full-time compulsory schooling, neither enter an apprenticeship or a measure of the Federal Employment Agency nor attend secondary school, full-time compulsory schooling is extended by one year. After completing the extended full-time compulsory education, they are entitled to attend vocational school until they reach the age of 18.
In Hesse, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs is responsible for the school system.
