Places on degree courses with restricted admission are partly allocated according to selection criteria. The average grade of the university entrance qualification is an important selection criterion. If you were prevented from achieving a better average grade due to circumstances for which you are not responsible, you can apply to improve your average grade. The application must be accompanied by appropriate evidence such as a school report (see "Required documents").
If you have any questions about the school report, please contact your school directly and if you have any questions about the application to improve your average grade, please contact your university of choice (for locally admission-restricted degree programs) and the Foundation for University Admissions (for nationally admission-restricted degree programs).
Please note: This option is not necessarily available in the application process for universities of art and music.
Please contact the university of your choice (for locally admission-restricted degree programs) and the Foundation for University Admissions (for nationally admission-restricted degree programs) to find out about the formalities and deadlines for applying to improve your average grade. Impairment-related circumstances, such as a prolonged stay in hospital, are not sufficient on their own to cause an improvement in the average grade. The decisive factor is how these circumstances affected the average grade or the time at which the higher education entrance qualification was acquired.
- Proof of the impairment-related circumstances
The impairment-related circumstances can be proven by a specialist medical report, the assessment notice from the pension office and other supporting documents.
- Additional evidence to improve the average grade
The connection between impairment-related circumstances and a drop in school performance must be proven by copies of school reports and additionally by a school report (not from individual teachers). All documents on which the school report is based must be enclosed.
Important: The preparation of a school report is time-consuming, as each teacher must individually state the relevant grade fluctuation.
Reasons for improving the average grade can be, for example
- Prolonged absence from classes due to illness (in the case of an application to improve the average grade, only the last three years before obtaining the university entrance qualification)
- Degree of disability of 50 or higher (= severe disability)
- Prolonged severe disability or illness, if not already covered by the two aforementioned reasons, or other comparable special health circumstances
This list is not exhaustive. Please contact the university of your choice (for locally admission-restricted degree programs) and the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (for nationally admission-restricted degree programs) to find out which reasons may apply. In an application to improve the average grade, which must be submitted together with the application in the application portal, the special exceptional situation must be justified in detail and conclusively and supported by the relevant evidence. Please remember to apply for the necessary evidence (school report) in good time. The preparation of a school report is time-consuming, as each subject teacher must explain the relevant grade fluctuation.
Applications and forms can be found on the websites of the respective university (for locally admission-restricted degree programs) and at the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (for nationally admission-restricted degree programs) or as part of the respective online application procedure.
