Since 1 January 2007, last holders of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (i.e. vehicles for the carriage of goods up to 3.5 tonnes) have been able to return their end-of-life cars they wish to dispose of to the manufacturer or importer free of charge. They are obliged to take back end-of-life vehicles and must set up a comprehensive take-back system themselves or through commissioned third parties. End-of-life vehicles from which essential parts or components or electronic control units have been removed and which were not registered in the European Union at least 1 month before the final decommissioning are exempt from free take-back.

If a vehicle is finally immobilized and disposed of, the certified end-of-life vehicle recycling company must submit a certificate of destruction to the vehicle registration authority.

If you want to have your disused vehicle permanently withdrawn from circulation, you must leave it for disposal at a recognised collection point, a recognised collection point or a recognised dismantling company. There you will receive a certificate of destruction, which you present to the vehicle registration office for deregistration.
