Do you have a professional qualification as a recognized educator from abroad and would now like to practice your profession in Saxony-Anhalt? Then you will find all the important information here.

The profession of educator is regulated in Germany by the individual federal states. This means that you may only work in this profession in the state of Saxony-Anhalt if you are entitled to use the professional title "State-recognized educator".

Equivalence is checked with the qualification "Staatlich anerkannte Erzieherin/staatlich anerkannter Erzieher", which is awarded in Saxony-Anhalt at technical colleges for social work specializing in social pedagogy. If there is no comprehensive equivalence, a decision will be made on compensatory measures (e.g. aptitude test).

The following documents must be attached to the application:

• a personally signed curriculum vitae with a description of your educational and professional background, details of language courses, further education and training since entering Germany,
• a proof of identity,
• Confirmation of residence in Saxony-Anhalt,
• Certificate of a change of name,
• school-leaving certificates and training certificates obtained abroad as well as subject and grade overviews in the original language and translation,
• Proof of relevant professional experience and other certificates of qualification, if these are required to determine equivalence (original or certified copy),
• a declaration as to whether and to which body an application for determination of equivalence has been submitted and whether a decision has already been issued. Notifications that have already been issued must also be enclosed.

Certificates, attestations and proof of identity must be submitted in the form of officially certified copies. The German translations prepared by a sworn and publicly appointed translator must be attached to the foreign-language documents and certificates.

Anyone who is qualified to work as an educator in their country of origin can apply for an equivalence assessment and state recognition as an educator.

It is irrelevant what nationality you have or in which country you acquired your qualification.

State recognition for the profession of "state-recognized educator" will be granted if you meet the following requirements:

• Your training certificate is comparable to the German training for educators
• You were also allowed to work as an educator in the country in which you trained.
• There are no significant differences between your professional qualification and the professional qualification regulated by national law.

Fees of 25.00 to 600.00 euros are charged and depend on the cost of the recognition procedure.

• You submit a written application including all necessary documents and send it to the Saxony-Anhalt State Education Authority.
• It will then be checked whether your documents have been submitted in full. If this is not the case, you will be asked in writing to submit the relevant documents.
• For the purpose of recognition, the competent authority will check on the basis of your certificates whether and to what extent your foreign qualification corresponds to a German qualification for the profession of educator. This check is based on defined formal criteria, such as the content and duration of the training. Your relevant professional experience is also taken into account, as are other relevant qualifications.
• WithinWithin 3 months of submitting the complete documents, you will be informed in writing by the competent body whether
  • recognition will be granted,
  • there are deficits in the qualification and compensatory measures are therefore necessary before recognition,
  • recognition cannot be granted

The competent body must decide on your equivalence within 3 months. The period begins with the receipt of the complete documents.
