Within the European Union and when importing from third countries, a distinction is made according to the purpose of the movement / import of pets.
Travelling with pets
The import or intra-Community movement of pets for purposes other than trade is regulated by a special regulation. It requires the pet animal to be accompanied by its owner. As a rule, this is the case for holiday travellers (travel regulation).
Cross-border trade in pet animals
If pets are imported for the purpose of trade or moved within the Community, the rules of the Directive issued for this purpose (Directive 92/65) apply in principle.
Separate regulations apply to exports, which are based on the requirements of the respective third country.
For this reason, please enquire about the regulations that apply to your individual concern via the Single Point of Contact (for commercial concerns) or directly at the locally competent Food Control and Veterinary Office.
Single point of contact (Einheitlicher Ansprechpartner)
For this procedure, you can use the services of the point of single contact. He or she will guide you through the procedure, take care of the correspondence with all the offices responsible for your concern and will be at your side as a competent advisor.
For the application you need
- an application for a health certificate formulated by you in writing, as well as
- the form of a health certificate for countries for which there are no coordinated certificates.
- Contact the point of single contact (only for commercial requests) or the competent food control and veterinary office.
- Provide detailed information on the planned transport (destination country, destination, purpose, etc.).
- The authority will research the health requirements of the destination country and check your submitted documents.
- Only then will the animal be examined.
- If your animal meets the required conditions, the health certificate will be issued to you.
