Registering on the electoral roll if you move before the election / voting at your previous place of residence

The entry in the electoral roll when moving described below relates to elections to the German Bundestag and the European Parliament (registration is not possible for state parliament elections and only possible to a limited extent for local elections - depending on the local circumstances, the right to vote in local elections may no longer apply when moving).

Bundestag and European elections

Are you moving to Saxony shortly before the election or moving within Saxony? If you are not yet registered at your new place of residence on the 42nd day before the election but would like to vote there, you can register in the electoral roll of your new place of residence up to the 21st day before the election. As the data is taken from the registration register on the cut-off date, the city or municipal administration of the new place of residence cannot automatically include your details in the electoral roll.

If you are not entered in the electoral roll of the municipality you are moving to, you will receive a polling card for your former place of residence and will be able to vote there. If you only move within the municipality or city and your new home is in a different electoral district, you will remain on the electoral roll of the electoral district for which you were registered on the 42nd day before the election.

Voting at your previous place of residence

If you re-register after the 42nd day before the election and do not apply for entry in the electoral roll of your future city or municipality, you will receive a polling card from the city or municipal administration of your former place of residence. You can vote there on election day or have a polling card issued and cast your vote by post.

Rechtsbehelf

If a municipal authority does not accept an application for registration, the person concerned may lodge an objection with the municipal authority in writing or for the record, Section 15 (8) EuWO, Section 16 (8) BWO.
