At the college, adults have the opportunity to prepare for and take the general university entrance examination (Abitur). Classes are not held part-time, as is the case with evening classes, but in full-time, i.e. as in normal schooling.
The college usually begins with a one-year introductory phase (two school semesters). This is followed by the two-year course phase with grades 11 and 12 (four course semesters). Under certain circumstances, however, you can skip the introductory phase or you may have to complete a one-year preliminary course (two school semesters). The college period thus lasts between two and four years.

An informal application is usually sufficient, but you are advised to get in touch with the principal in advance about the formalities of applying.
You must submit the following with your application for admission
- a complete tabular CV with a photograph
- birth certificate
- certified copy of the last school leaving certificate (the college may require the submission of further school certificates)
- proof of completed vocational training or of the required professional activity (certified copies or original documents)
- a statement as to whether and, if so, where you have already taken part in an Abitur examination and whether you have obtained the general university entrance qualification
To be accepted at a college, you must meet the following requirements:
- You have completed vocational training or have been employed for at least two years.
Vocational training is counted towards the required duration of professional activity. In justified cases, the principal may partially or completely waive the requirement of two years of professional activity, especially in the case of:
- You are taking parental leave or care for a minor or another person in need of care.
- You are unemployed (certificate from the Federal Employment Agency required) or completed a federal voluntary service, military service, civilian service or voluntary social or ecological year.
- You do not hold the general university entrance qualification (Abitur) and have not yet taken two unsuccessful examinations to obtain it.
- You are at least 19 years old at the beginning of the school year.
Preliminary course - entrance examination - introductory phase
You start the college with the preliminary course if you hold a secondary modern school leaving certificate (Hauptschulabschluss).
- You start the introductory phase at the college if you have been transferred at the end of the preliminary course or if you have a Realschulabschluss or equivalent school-leaving certificate.
Skipping the preliminary course and introductory phase
- You can skip the preliminary course and the introductory phase if you expect to be able to meet the requirements of the course phase (grades 11 and 12), especially if you:
- hold the entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife)
- hold a subject-related higher education entrance qualification, or
- have left the Gymnasium after grade 11.
Change to another college
- If you have successfully completed the preliminary course, you can continue with the introductory phase at another college. The same applies when changing schools between the introductory phase and the course phase.
- During the course phase you can only change to another college if you will be able to continue the mandatory courses starting in grade 11.
- During the school year, you may only change schools for good reason, for example, if you change your place of residence.
In order to attend a college, you must register with the college in advance.
- The school management decides about the admission to the school.
- You will be informed of the decision in writing.
Tip: Before the application deadline expires, the colleges hold information sessions on the educational programs of the respective schools and the admission requirements.
