Have you acquired your educational qualifications abroad and would like to have them recognised in Saxony? Upon application, the equivalence with a Saxon secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate school leaving certificate (Realschulabschluss) or university entrance qualification (Abitur) will be checked and a certificate issued.

If you are planning to attend school abroad, you can also obtain advice on the requirements for the subsequent recognition of foreign educational qualifications in Saxony.

• Application form
• certificates of education/graduation or leaving certificate issued abroad by the last educational institution attended (including the translation of these certificates)
• Certificates of school attendance in Germany
• Proof of school career counselling (for applicants up to the age of 25)
• Copy of identity card, passport or passport
• iD card of displaced persons, if applicable
• proof of name change, if applicable (marriage certificate, with a translation into German if necessary)

If you have already taken part in a university entrance examination in your country of origin or have completed a degree programme at a university, please add the following documents to your application:

• Proof of the foreign university entrance examination
• foreign academic records with coursework and examination results (overview of subjects and grades)
• if applicable, foreign degree certificate (e.g. Bachelor's degree)
• Translations of the above-mentioned certificates

Note: All documents that you submit for the recognition of foreign educational certificates must be submitted in the form of an officially certified copy.

Only submit the original certified copies and not originals, uncertified copies or copies of certified copies.

In addition, all documents in a foreign language must also be submitted as a translation in German. These will only be accepted by the assessment offices if they have been prepared by a court-appointed translator recognised in Germany (or by the German embassy in the country of origin).

Note: Exception: If the authority issuing the certificate in the country of origin issues English-language documents or bilingual certificates that are written in English, among other languages, no translation is required.

The requirements for recognition are very complex and always depend on the individual case.

• You can apply for recognition if you live in the Free State of Saxony or require recognition for training, studies, professional or other activities in the Free State of Saxony.
• If you are continuing your educational career in Saxony, no formal recognition procedure is usually required.
• Please contact the State Office for Schools and Education for advice on this.

University entrance qualification

At the Central Office for Foreign Education of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs you will find extensive documentation on a large number of countries:

• the education system
• the various foreign higher education qualifications and degrees
• the requirements for obtaining them and
• Information on their categorisation in relation to German higher education qualifications and degrees

Recognition of foreign school certificates including diplomas and similar certificates up to university entrance and professional qualifications:

• EUR 35.00 to EUR 675.00

Recognition of examinations or certificates of qualification for persons entitled under the Federal Expellee Act, provided that an application has been submitted within three years of the date of permanent residence in the Federal Republic of Germany:

Please use the relevant form to submit your application. Fill it out completely and submit it together with the required documents to the relevant office.

• Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed and a decision will be made on the equivalence of your educational qualification with a German qualification.
• You will receive a written decision.

Please note: As part of the admission procedure for a degree programme, some universities independently assess foreign educational qualifications.

• This categorisation only applies to the respective university.
• A formal recognition procedure by the Certificate Recognition Centre would therefore not be necessary.
• If necessary, enquire in advance about the procedure at the university at which you wish to study.
• However, if you would like to apply to different universities or training providers, it would be advantageous to have the recognition notice issued by the Certificate Recognition Centre.

Electronic signature - how can I sign electronically?

A qualified electronic signature is required to fulfil the signature requirement for electronic applications. This is the only way to ensure that the identity of the sender can be verified.

Your application and the necessary declarations require your handwritten signature. Under German law, your application form must be provided with a qualified electronic signature in order to be considered signed. You will need an appropriate programme for this. You can obtain electronic signatures from

• Trust service providers (according to the list of the Federal Network Agency) or
• the Bundesdruckerei (for citizens with a new ID card/nPA or electronic residence permit)
