If you were adopted as a child, you can inspect your placement file when you reach the age of 16. Under the guidance of a specialist from the adoption agency, you will receive information about your origins and life history.
Note: You can still inspect your file at an advanced age: The adoption agency is legally obliged to keep the records and documents relating to your placement for 100 years (from your date of birth).
- The right of inspection exists from the age of 16. Before that, the consent of your adoptive parents is required.
- The right to inspect files applies to all information concerning your origin and life history. In contrast, data that also concerns other persons (for example, your birth parents) may not be inspected. These may only be disclosed if there is another justified interest or the consent of the persons concerned has been obtained.
- For general counselling, contact the adoption agency in whose area you live. If necessary, the professionals will contact the adoption agency (Adoptionvermittlungsstelle) that placed you.
- The professionals of the adoption agency that placed you will allow you to inspect the file and inform you about your background as well as your life history. As a rule, the file also contains reports on your development which the adoption agency has prepared in the course of follow-up care.
- If you wish, the professionals will try to establish contact with your birth parents. They also mediate if your family of origin tries to contact you.
- The adoption agency also tries to find an appropriate individual solution for the birth parents and siblings from the family of origin.
