The processing time for issuing a new passport is two to six weeks. You can check the processing status at any time by telephone, in person or, in many cases, by e-mail.

Some authorities offer you the opportunity to find out on the Internet whether the new passport has already arrived and can be collected.

You should have the number of the passport you applied for (on the payment receipt you received when you applied) to hand for a status enquiry. In some cases, a PIN will also be allocated, which must be given when the status is requested.

• In some places, an information sheet is handed out when you apply for a passport to enquire about the processing status. In this case, simply follow the instructions described there.
• You can also use Amt24 to find out whether the passport authority offers an online enquiry. To do this, enter your place of residence or postcode in the location selection and confirm your entry. If the authority offers an online enquiry, you will find a link under "Forms & online services".
• If the authority does not offer an online service, you can also enquire about the processing status of your document in person or by telephone at any time.
