Tip: If you want the registry office to issue you with several marriage certificates at the same time, apply for this when you register your marriage.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • Identity card or passport (certified copy if applying in writing)
  • if collected by a representative: written authorisation from the authorised person, their ID (original or certified copy) and their own ID
  • if applicable: proof of relationship or legal interest

Voraussetzungen

The personal data in the civil status register is subject to data protection. Marriage certificates can therefore only be issued

  • for persons to whom the entry relates

as well as their

  • Ancestors and descendants.

The relationship must be proven, for example by presenting your own birth certificate.

Other persons, including relatives such as siblings, aunts and uncles, will only receive a marriage certificate if they can credibly demonstrate a legal interest (e.g. with a letter from the probate court, a court judgement or an enforceable title).

Kosten

  • Marriage certificate (first copy): EUR 15.00
  • if further copies are ordered at the same time: EUR 7.00 each

Verfahrensablauf

  • Go to the relevant registry office.
  • Present your identity card or passport for legitimisation.
  • You usually pay the fee in advance when applying at the registry office.

Tip: A person you trust can apply for and collect the certificate on your behalf; your representative will present their own and your identity card or passport (original or certified copy) in addition to a written power of attorney.

Applying without appearing in person at the registry office

  • Send an informal letter to the relevant registry office asking them to issue you with a marriage certificate. Depending on what the town or municipality offers, you can also find application forms on the Internet.
  • Your letter must contain the following information:
    • Surname, first name
    • Date and place of birth
    • Date of marriage
    • Details of the spouse
    • if known: Registry office and notarisation number
  • Enclose a notarised copy of your identity card or passport with the letter.
  • If further information or proof is required, the registry office will contact you.
  • You will usually receive a notification of fees when the certificate is sent to you. Some registry offices also request the fee in advance. In these cases, the certificate will be sent to you once payment has been received.

Frist

Marriage registers are kept in the registry office for 80 years.

After this period has expired, the civil registers are handed over to the municipal or city archives. Requests for documents held in the archive are automatically forwarded there. There is no notification of submission.

Transcripts from the family register have no longer been issued since 1 January 2009 - the registry office continues to keep the data from the family registers as marriage entries.

Transcripts from the family registers (exceptions)

In exceptional cases, the registry office can issue certified copies from the previous family registers as proof of birth if the birth of the child of the spouses is not recorded in a German civil status register.

The parents or the child themselves are authorised to apply.
