If you have opted for a home birth, each parent with custody of the child is obliged to report the birth.
If you, as the custodial parent, are unable to report the birth, any other person who was present at the birth or who has direct knowledge of it is obliged to report it.
- Certificate from the midwife / maternity nurse or doctor confirming the birth
- parents' identity card or passport (or recognised passport substitute)

if the mother is single:
- birth certificate of the mother
if paternity has already been recognised or is to be recognised before the birth is notarised:
- declaration of acknowledgement of paternity/certified copy of the father's declaration of acknowledgement
- notarised copy of the mother's declaration of consent
- birth certificate of the father
- declaration of custody, if available
if the mother is divorced or widowed:
- notarised printout from the marriage register or
- birth certificate and marriage certificate of the mother and divorce decree or death certificate
for foreign parents:
- proof of residence permit to prove the acquisition of German citizenship for the child
Note: The registry office may request further documents if this is necessary to verify information.

- are the mother,
- are the father of the child with custody rights,
- were present at the birth as a midwife, maternity nurse, doctor or medical practitioner or
- are another person and know about it.

- birth certificate for the social benefit "Assistance with pregnancy and maternity": free of charge
- additional certificates: EUR 15,00 each (each additional certificate of the same type EUR 7,00 if applied for at the same time)
The birth must be registered in person with the necessary documents at the registry office in the place of birth.

- If the name has not yet been determined, it must be reported to the registry office within one month.
Requesting birth certificates
After the birth, you can request a birth certificate free of charge from the registry office for the social benefit "Assistance with pregnancy and maternity". The certificate is only issued once for this purpose.

Subsequent registration of the name
If the child's first name and, if applicable, surname are not yet known when the birth is announced, they must be registered with the registry office within one month.
Note: The registry office will inform the registration office of the birth of your child.
