On election day, poll workers are deployed as members of the electoral bodies or as assistants in the polling station.

The tasks of the polling assistants include, for example

• Checking eligibility to vote based on the electoral roll
• Issuing the ballot papers
• Releasing the ballot box for the ballot paper to be inserted
• Helping to determine the election result 

Working as an election assistant is an honorary position. You must carry out your duties impartially and are obliged to maintain confidentiality about any matters you become aware of during your official duties.

Polling assistants are appointed by the electoral office (Wahlamt) of the respective municipality. Preference is given to electoral assistants who volunteer for this honorary position.

Poll workers may receive an expense allowance and a refreshment allowance for their work, which varies depending on the type of election (state, federal, European and local elections).

• You can volunteer as a poll worker in your municipality or town. You can also specify your preferred electoral district for your assignment.
• Your municipality or town will then try to deploy you there. However, you can also be deployed as a poll worker outside your own constituency.

Please contact your municipal or city administration to apply as a poll worker. Applications can be submitted in good time before the day of the election or the vote or after a corresponding call in the official gazette, on the website or in the press.

Municipalities and cities may collect and process personal data (surname, first name, academic degree, date of birth, address, telephone numbers, email addresses, number of appointments made as a member of an election committee and the function exercised) of eligible voters for the purpose of appointing them as election assistants. The data may also be processed for future elections, provided the data subjects have not objected to the processing of their data. The data subjects must be informed of their right to object.

Poll workers are entitled to reimbursement of their necessary expenses and loss of earnings (for example, if the count is interrupted during the night and resumed on Monday morning). In addition, the city/municipality can also grant an expense allowance by statute (so-called refreshment allowance).
