The online ID function is blocked if your identity card has been lost. The use of the online ID function is blocked by an entry in a central blocking list. The identity card or the online ID function can then no longer be used, even if it is still switched on on the chip of the identity card.
All providers of online services that use the online ID function must call up so-called blocking lists at short update intervals, on which the necessary information on all blocked identity cards is noted. If the online ID function of your identity card is blocked, this information is also available to all online service providers within a very short time. It is therefore no longer possible to misuse your online ID function by using these services.
Blocking can be requested at any time by calling the blocking hotline and providing your blocking password:
Telephone: 116 116
(free of charge from German landlines and mobile networks, from abroad chargeable via +49 116 116)
Note: The online identity card function is also always blocked if the Personalausweisbehörde (identity card authority) becomes aware that an identity card holder has died. Even if a Personalausweisbehörde becomes aware of the loss of an identity card with the online identity card function switched on in any other way (e.g. from a police authority), it will block it "ex officio".
Attention! Successful blocking of the online ID function does not replace the obligation to report the loss to your local Personalausweisbehörde. Failure to fulfil this obligation can be punished with a fine of up to EUR 5,000.
- Documents that can prove your identity (e.g. passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, driving licence)
- for representation: power of attorney
- for the blocking hotline: Details of personal data and blocking password
Blocking via the blocking hotline
- Telephone: 116 116
(free of charge from a German landline and German mobile phone networks, chargeable from abroad via +49 116 116)
To block the card, you must enter your blocking password, your surname, your first names and your date of birth.
Blocking at the identity card authority
You can have your identity card blocked in person (also by telephone) or by a representative. The representative must provide proof of authorisation to block the card by means of a power of attorney.
You inform the identity card authority of your request (blocking request). Once you have been identified, the identity card authority will arrange for the card to be blocked.
The online ID function will be blocked immediately.
As a rule, the blocking will also be carried out immediately if you initiate the blocking at the municipality that issued your identity card.
If you block your identity card with the local authority in your current place of residence, which did not issue your identity card, it will usually forward your blocking request immediately to your "ausstellende Personalausweisbehörde" so that they can block it without delay. However, this may take some time due to the different working hours of the authorities and longer communication channels.
Blocking via the blocking hotline is possible around the clock, every day of the week, 24 hours a day, even from abroad and immediately. You will receive notification of the successful blocking directly from the blocking hotline.
