The archival records of the Free State of Saxony are in principle accessible to all interested parties. However, inspection is only possible in the department of the Saxon State Archives (Sächsisches Staatsarchiv) that holds the archive material in question.
- for personal research and consultation in the reading room: none
- for research by archive staff: depending on expenditure
Before visiting the reading room in the relevant department, it is recommended that you enquire by post, e-mail or telephone whether
- Archival material is available on the topic of interest,
- that this archive material can be used,
- If there are any restrictions on use.
Tip: Use the research possibilities of the online database before visiting the archive.
Registration
When you visit a reading room of the State Archives for the first time, you must submit an application for use. This is usually approved at short notice.
Research
- In the reading rooms you can use all available finding aids (databases, card indexes, finding aids) to carry out your research for relevant archive material.
- To order an archival item from the stacks to the reading room, you need the five-digit fonds signature and the archival shelfmark for the order slip. The staff will retrieve the archival items from the stacks at specific times.
Tip: If necessary, you can often make copies yourself directly in the reading room using a book or film scanner in analogue or digital form, or you can photograph archive material yourself.
