Before you can be issued a hunting licence for the first time, you must pass the hunting examination. The theoretical and practical training is the prerequisite for being authorised to take the examination in the Free State of Saxony. It is possible to take a falconry examination separately or in conjunction with the hunting examination.
Hunting examination - contents
The hunter's examination consists of a written and an oral-practical part and a shooting test (not applicable for falconry). In the examination, you demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the following areas
Hunting lore:
- Animal species
- Game biology, game ecology
- Hunting operations including hunting dogs
- Game damage prevention
- Agriculture and silviculture
- Nature conservation and biotope management
Weapons science:
- Weapons law
- Weapons technology
- Carrying hunting weapons including handguns
Consumer protection:
- Game hygiene
- Game diseases
- Game utilisation
Law:
- Hunting, nature conservation and landscape management law
- Animal welfare law
- other relevant areas of law
Poor performance in the shooting examination cannot be compensated for by good results in other parts of the examination. If you do not pass the examination, you can repeat it or the parts of the examination that you did not pass.
- Identity card/passport (copy) or current confirmation of registration

- Proof of attendance of at least 120 hours of a recognised training course

- Admission: EUR 20,00
- Examination fee (fee range): EUR 115,00 to 445,00 (pro rata if parts of the examination are repeated)
First find out about the current examination dates from the hunting authority (-> Competent authority).
Depending on the requirements of the hunting authority, you can register for the hunting examination with an informal letter, in writing or online. Use the online application or forms if they are available in Amt24 (see -> Online application and forms).
Online application
Set up a service account in Amt24 and use it to log in to the service portal. Have electronic copies of the required documents ready.
- Follow the link to the online application and fill in the data fields according to the instructions. You can save the information at any time and complete it at a later date.
- Once all the data fields have been completed, finalise the application and the data will be sent to the responsible office.
- You will find the application confirmation in the inbox of your service account. You will receive a notification of incoming messages to your personal e-mail address.
If you are unable to use the online service, please send your written application with the required documents to the relevant office by post.
Registration for the hunter examination: no later than six weeks before the date of the written examination
For applicants who held an annual hunting licence before 01.04.1953, the hunting test is not required. A hunting examination taken in the German Democratic Republic prior to the effective date of accession for hunters who wish to hunt with a hunting weapon shall be deemed equivalent to the hunting examination within the meaning of sentence 1.
