The school management must report persistent violations of compulsory school attendance to the regulatory authority (Ordnungsbehörde).
Refusal to attend school is an administrative offence that can be punished with a fine of up to EUR 1,250. It may also be an offence if legal guardians do not take sufficient steps to ensure that their underage children attend school regularly.
In order to avoid compulsory school attendance having to be enforced or fined, the school management and school authorities try to motivate the pupil to attend school again through counselling and support together with the legal guardians.
Compulsory School Attendance
Children and young people are required to attend school if they are resident or ordinarily resident in the Free State of Saxony.
In the case of children and young people who are not yet 18 years old, their legal guardians must ensure that they regularly attend lessons and other compulsory events at school.
If you, as a legal guardian, notice signs of truancy in your child, please contact the class teacher, the school counsellor or the school social worker in confidence. In the event of persistent abnormalities, you can also contact the educational or family counselling centre in your city or district in addition to the responsible school psychological counselling centre.
