In order to take a master craftsman's examination, you must apply for admission to the examination.

In order to take the master craftsman's examination in a craft requiring a license, you must submit an application for admission. To be admitted to the master craftsman's examination, you must have already passed the journeyman's examination or have the relevant professional experience.

The master craftsman examination determines

• whether you can practice a craft requiring a license
• can run your own business,
• and can train apprentices properly.

The master craftsman examination consists of 4 parts in which the following knowledge is tested:

• practical
• theoretical technical,
• business management
• and pedagogical knowledge.

Once you have passed the examination, you will receive a certificate and may use the title of Master Craftsman. Once you have obtained the master craftsman title, you may also use the title Bachelor Professional.

If you fail any part of the exam, you can retake it up to 3 times.

You must fulfill one of the following requirements:

• You must have passed the journeyman's examination in the craft requiring a license in which you wish to take the master craftsman's examination.
  
• Or you must have passed the examination in a related craft requiring a license or a corresponding final examination in a recognized training occupation.
  
• Or you have a certificate of equivalence for the corresponding craft requiring a license or for a related craft requiring a license.
  
• Or you have passed another journeyman's examination or another final examination in a recognized training occupation and you have worked for several years in the craft requiring a license in which you wish to take the master craftsman's examination.
  • Depending on the occupation, the maximum duration of professional activity is 3 years.
  • 1-year technical college is counted as one year of professional activity
  • Several years of vocational school are counted as 2 years of professional activity
    
• In the following cases, the period of practical work will be credited:
  If you work in the craft requiring a license in which you wish to take the master craftsman's examination,
  • have been self-employed as a master craftsman or master craftswoman,
  • have worked in a similar position
  • provide evidence of practical experience equivalent to that of a journeyman

The amount of the fees can be found in the fee schedule of the responsible Chamber of Crafts.

If you would like to take the master craftsman's examination in a craft requiring a license, you should obtain information in advance from the relevant Chamber of Crafts and prepare for the examination accordingly.

  • Part 1: the examination of the masterly execution of the essential work in the respective craft

  • Part 3: examination of the necessary business management, commercial and legal knowledge
  • Part 4: the examination of the required vocational and work education knowledge
    
• The examination is conducted and assessed by the master craftsman examination board. The master craftsman examination board is the state examination authority at the headquarters of the relevant Chamber of Crafts.
  
• After passing the master craftsman examination, you are entitled to use the title of master craftsman and receive a certificate.
  
• If you fail one part of the examination, you can repeat this part up to 3 times.

  • the examination of the required theoretical knowledge in the respective craft
  • the examination of the necessary business management, commercial and legal knowledge
  • the examination of the required vocational and work pedagogical knowledge
    
• After passing the master craftsman examination, the title of master craftsman may be used
  
• Passing the master craftsman examination corresponds to the Bachelor Professional qualification
  
• Each failed part of the master craftsman examination can be repeated up to 3 times
  
• The competent authority is the respective Chamber of Crafts
