If the data on your ID card is no longer up to date, you must have this changed as soon as possible.

The data on your ID card must always be up to date. You can apply for a new one from the ID card authority at your main place of residence. This is usually the Citizens' Registration Office.

You can also apply to any other ID card authority if you can provide an important reason. Please clarify the recognition of your reason in advance with the authority you have chosen. There is a surcharge for lack of jurisdiction. This means that you will have to pay more for your new ID card.

If you change your address, you do not need a new ID card, but you must still present it at the Citizens' Registration Office at your main place of residence. The authorities will note the new address on a sticker on the back of the ID card. They will also change the address in the chip on the ID card.

• Identity card, passport or children's passport or, if applicable, birth or marriage certificate
• Biometric passport photo

The identification requirement applies to you if you

• have German citizenship,
• have reached the age of 16 and
• are registered in Germany.

For applications outside your main place of residence:

• You must be able to provide an important reason why you are not applying for the ID card at the ID card authority at your main place of residence.

• EUR 37.00 for applicants aged 24 and over
• EUR 22.80 for applicants under 24 years of age
• EUR 13.00 surcharge for applications submitted outside office hours or to a non-competent authority
• EUR 30.00 surcharge for issuance by consular or diplomatic representation abroad

Change of address: free of charge

You must appear in person at the identity card office.

If you change your address: Contact

• the identity card authority at your place of residence
  • if you move within the municipality and
  • if you move abroad,
• the identity card authority at the new place of residence
  • if you move to another municipality.

The change of address on your ID card will be made immediately.

A new ID card will be issued for all other changes. Collection is usually possible after 2 weeks.
