Has your name changed after the marriage? Then you must present your passport to the passport authority immediately. A passport with an old name is invalid.

A new passport is required after a change of name when getting married or entering into a civil partnership.

A new passport only needs to be issued if the passport is still being used.

• current biometric photo, in passport format (45 x 35 mm) in portrait format, frontal photo without border, without headgear and without covering the eyes
• the current passport
• marriage certificate. The presentation of family registers is also accepted.

• before the age of 24: EUR 37.50
• from the age of 24: EUR 70.00 from 01.01.2024
• Temporary passport: EUR 26.00
• Change of passport/temporary passport (only size and/or eye color): EUR 6.00 (change of residence free of charge)
• Surcharge for an express passport: EUR 32.00
• Surcharge for a passport with 48 pages: EUR 22.00

Doubling of the fees:

• When issuing a temporary passport or changing a passport, temporary passport, if this is done outside official office hours at the instigation of the applicant.

When issuing a passport (even before the age of 24), temporary passport or change to a passport, temporary passport, if this is done by an incompetent authority at the instigation of the applicant.

The applicant must appear in person to apply for a passport (e-passport). The application is completed on the spot with the processor. The applicant only has to sign the application.

It can take up to eight weeks from the date of application before you can collect your passport from the passport office.

It is recommended that you apply for your passport in good time before you travel.

If you need your passport more quickly, you can also apply for it using the express procedure. A surcharge is added to the fee for this.
If the express application is received in good time, your passport will usually be ready for collection from the passport office on the following third working day (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays).

Period of validity

The period of validity depends on your age:

• under 24 years: Passport is valid for six years
• from the age of 24: Passport is valid for ten years

It is not possible to extend the period of validity of the passport.

You cannot take your passport with you immediately after submitting your application, as it is produced at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. If the passport is required earlier, an express passport can be applied for.

If you intend to travel abroad immediately after the marriage or the establishment of a civil partnership, you can apply for a new passport to be issued before the marriage or the establishment of the civil partnership; in any case, the passport will only be issued after the marriage or the establishment of the civil partnership and once the documents proving the use of the name have been submitted.

When applying for the documents, suitable documents from the registry office for the marriage are required.
