If you have German citizenship, are entitled to vote and are returning to Germany from abroad, you can have yourself entered on the electoral roll for the
European elections if the requirements for registration are not met ex officio.
If you have German citizenship and move back to Germany from abroad, you may not automatically be entered on the electoral roll for the European elections.
This depends on when you re-registered in Germany after your return. If you did so after the 42nd day and before the 20th day before the election, you must apply in writing to be entered on the electoral roll.
Declaration in lieu of an oath of eligibility to vote and declaration that no application for registration on the electoral roll has been submitted elsewhere
You can register on the electoral roll as a German of full age or as a German of full age without the right to vote after your return from abroad for the European elections if you:
- register in Germany after the 42nd day but before the 20th day before the election
- return to Germany as a German citizen from a member state of the European Union, or
have lived outside the Federal Republic of Germany as a German citizen and are returning to Germany if you had a place of residence or your habitual abode in Germany for at least 3 months after your 14th birthday and this was no longer than 25 years ago, or
return to Germany as a German or a German from other states if for other reasons they have acquired personal and direct familiarity with the political conditions in the Federal Republic and were affected by them.
- You register with your municipality of residence after the 42nd day but before the 20th day.
- You affirm in lieu of an oath that you are entitled to vote and declare that no application for registration on the electoral roll has been made elsewhere.

- Application for registration requires affirmation in lieu of an oath of eligibility to vote and declaration that no other application for registration has been submitted in Germany or another EU member state.
