Monument protection and preservation serve to research/preserve cultural monuments and monument areas.

Monument protection and monument preservation serve to research and preserve cultural monuments and monument areas. Monument protection refers to sovereign activities, while monument preservation refers to scientific and advisory activities.

Cultural monuments are objects, groups of objects or parts of objects from the past whose research or preservation is in the public interest due to their special historical, scientific, artistic, urban planning, technical or cultural landscape value.

The approval of the lower monument protection authority is required for

• the restoration, alteration and destruction of a cultural monument,
• the transfer of a cultural monument of local historical or cultural landscape significance to another location,
• the alteration of the surroundings of an immovable cultural monument if it is likely to impair its impression.

There are attractive tax breaks for monument owners, provided that renovation or maintenance measures are agreed in advance with the higher monument protection authority.

The Schleswig-Holstein State Office for the Preservation of Monuments is responsible for the protection and maintenance of cultural monuments and monument areas with the exception of archaeological monuments and archaeological monument areas (archaeology). The Schleswig-Holstein State Archaeological Office is responsible for these.

To the districts or independent cities (= lower monument protection authority), which may have to obtain the approval of the higher monument protection authority.

Monument protection authorities are

1. The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of the State of Schleswig-Holstein as the highest monument protection authority,
2. the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and the Schleswig-Holstein State Archaeological Office as the higher monument protection authorities,
3. the district administrator for the districts and the mayor for the independent cities as the lower monument protection authorities.
