Archives in Schleswig-Holstein are open to everyone. For scientific purposes, for local history questions, to research your own family or to clarify legal issues, you can evaluate archive material in the relevant archive. Archive material can be files, but also maps, documents, photos, films or digital data. Many archives maintain libraries with local and regional historical publications.
The Schleswig-Holstein State Archive in Schleswig takes over and centrally secures the historical documents of the state administration and its predecessor authorities. The cities, districts, offices and municipalities maintain their own archives. In addition to the state archives and the municipal archives, you can also use church archives for your research. The archives of the Christian-Albrechts-University are administered by the state archives.
Archives make historical documents accessible in databases and directories, which are available in the reading rooms of the archives and partly on the internet. The archive staff will assist you with your research.
Documents can only be consulted on site in the reading rooms during opening hours. The valuable documents cannot be borrowed. As a rule, however, reproductions can be ordered. Prior registration may be necessary.
Some archives require you to present your identity card. Detailed information on this can be obtained from the respective archive.
The archive authorities decide on the charging of fees. Please contact the respective archive in this regard.
Further information can also be found on the website of the Schleswig-Holstein Archives.
