In particular, the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport ("EU Animal Welfare Transport Regulation") and the national Animal Welfare Transport Regulation of February 11, 2009 must be observed when transporting animals commercially. The ordinances regulate the handling of animals during loading, the space required and the provision of care for the animals during transportation, as well as the duration of transportation.
Every animal transport represents a burden for the animals to be transported. This is particularly true if the usual care times are exceeded. The aim must therefore be to prepare the animals individually for transportation and to adapt the duration of transportation to the needs of the animals.
Anyone who transports animals must be licensed as a transporter and must be appropriately trained or qualified. Persons transporting farm animals by road over a distance of more than 65 km also require a certificate of competence.
The fees vary depending on the work involved. Detailed information on this can be obtained from the competent authority.
It must be clarified with the competent veterinary authority which other legal requirements must be met for the planned transport. This depends on numerous factors (e.g. animal species, age of the animals but also the destination of the transport).
