In the wastewater network, a distinction is made between wastewater and rainwater sewers. In some towns, wastewater and rainwater are drained via a joint combined sewer. Wastewater is transported either free-flowing or via pressure systems.
The owners/operators of public sewage systems are the bodies responsible for wastewater disposal, i.e. the sewage association, city or municipality.
Damage can be caused by burst sewer pipes (visible through the sinking of surfaces or in the area of the manholes) or e.g. defective manhole covers (also rattling manhole covers). Furthermore, alarm lights or conspicuous noises at sewage pumping stations can indicate damage to the pipe system.
Faults in the sewage system can be caused by blockages (obstacles or foreign objects in the sewer or pumping station) or by backwater during heavy rainfall or the discharge of pollutants into the sewer system.

Reports of blockages in the sewer network (often the first effects can be seen on private properties), sewage pipe leaks or defective manholes, discharges of pollutants must be reported to the responsible wastewater disposal authorities

In emergency situations, the fire department or police may also need to be informed.
