As a citizen of the European Union living in Germany, you can vote in the European elections if you are registered on the electoral roll.
If you are a citizen of the European Union living in Germany and would like to vote in the European elections, you must first be entered in the electoral register. This is either done automatically ex officio or you must submit an application.
If you have already been entered in the electoral roll for previous European elections and have not moved abroad in the meantime, you will be entered in the electoral roll ex officio and do not need to submit an application.
In all other cases, you must apply to be included in the voters' register.
You will be added to the electoral roll ex officio if on election day you
- are a citizen of a member state of the European Union,
- are at least 16 years old,
- are not excluded from the right to vote and
- were entered on the electoral roll in previous European elections.
You will be entered on the electoral roll upon request,
if on election day:
- are a national of a member state of the European Union,
- are at least 16 years old on election day,
- are not excluded from the right to vote and
- have had a residence or habitual abode in Germany for at least 3 months or
- have a contract of employment, employment contract or training contract as a captain or crew member for a seagoing vessel flying the German flag or
- are registered as a skipper of an inland waterway vessel entered in the German shipping register or as a member of the corresponding household or
- are registered at the address of a prison or similar institution in Germany.
As a citizen of the Union, you can register on the electoral roll for the European elections as follows:
- You submit an application in accordance with Annex 2A of the European Electoral Regulations to the municipality responsible for you.
- The authority will decide on your application and send you a voter's notification or a rejection notice.

- Entry is made ex officio or on application
- ex officio:
- Citizenship of a Member State of the European Union,
- at least 16 years old on election day,
- no exclusion from the right to vote,
- if already registered in the voters' register for previous European elections and have not moved abroad in the meantime
- on application:
- no entry ex officio,
- Citizenship of a member state of the European Union,
- at least 16 years old on election day,
- no exclusion from the right to vote,
- have lived or habitually resided in Germany for at least 3 months on election day or
- in the case of an employment, employment or training contract as a captain or crew member for a seagoing vessel flying the German flag or
- a skipper of an inland waterway vessel registered in the German shipping register or as a member of the corresponding household or
- registered at the address of a prison or similar institution in Germany
- responsible at the time of application:
- Municipality,
- in which you live,
- in which you usually reside,
- in which the shipowner has his or her registered office,
- which is the home town of the inland vessel or
- in which the prison is located
The point of contact in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the head of the local authority in the municipalities belonging to the district and the mayor for the other municipalities.
