If you wish to discharge commercial/industrial wastewater into a public wastewater system or sewer system, you generally require a permit.
If you want to discharge wastewater into a public wastewater system, you need a permit. Under certain conditions, the permit requirement does not apply.
For certain industries and activities (such as the chemical industry, paper production, metal processing, cooling water use), pollutants are to be expected in the wastewater that are not sufficiently purified in a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Requirements for this are set out in the sector-specific annexes to the Waste Water Ordinance.
In order to comply with these requirements, special measures and wastewater pre-treatment plants are required to reduce the pollutant load so that the wastewater can then be treated in a public sewage treatment plant without causing any harm.
Under certain conditions, water authority approval is deemed to have been granted for the discharge of wastewater containing amalgam, the pollutant load of which essentially originates from treatment areas in dental practices and dental clinics, into a public wastewater treatment plant. These discharges must be reported to the responsible water authority.
In addition to the official approval of the indirect discharge, the statutory requirements of the body responsible for wastewater disposal (municipality or association) must also be observed.
- Application
The other documents required depend on the wastewater (e.g. industrial wastewater or commercial wastewater) that is to be discharged into the public wastewater system. You can obtain more detailed information from the responsible office.
If applicable:
- Information on the production of the discharging company
- Information on the wastewater produced, the sewers and the planned pre-treatment facilities
Approval may only be granted if
- the requirements of the Waste Water Ordinance applicable to the waste water are complied with,
- the public sewage treatment plant can adequately purify the wastewater and
- the wastewater is pre-treated by the discharging company in such a way that the above requirements are met.
- Fee range: EUR 70 - 15,000
- You can apply for a permit to discharge wastewater into public wastewater systems at the responsible office.
- You fill out the application form and submit it with all the necessary documents.
- The competent authority will check your application.
- If all the necessary requirements are met, your application can be approved.
- You will receive a permit to discharge wastewater into public wastewater facilities
The processing time depends on the quality and scope of the applications and documents submitted.
The application must be submitted in good time, as wastewater may only be discharged into a public wastewater system if a permit has been issued.
- Discharging wastewater into public wastewater systems Approval
- The discharge of commercial and industrial wastewater into public wastewater systems generally requires official approval
- under certain conditions, however, a permit is not required
- Special regulations for wastewater in which pollutants are to be assumed can be found in the annexes to the sector-specific wastewater ordinances
- Application from the competent authority
- Ask the competent authority for the required documents
The district councils and the mayors of the independent cities are responsible for performing these tasks as lower water authorities.
The State Offices for Agriculture and the Environment are responsible for issuing a permit for indirect discharges if the discharge from the downstream wastewater treatment plant is into coastal waters.
