If you have another home, for example a second home, secondary home or privately used vacation home, for which no broadcasting fee is yet paid, you must register this home for the broadcasting fee in addition to your main home.

If you rent or buy a second or secondary residence in addition to your existing home, you must register it with the Contribution Service. This also applies to vacation homes and caravans that are used exclusively for private purposes and that you use primarily on a fixed location.

If you live with several adult persons in the apartment, you can decide for yourself who registers the apartment. If you move into a second or secondary residence for which a broadcasting fee is already paid, you do not need to register for the broadcasting fee.

You must register the second or secondary residence from the beginning of the month in which you move into the apartment. The amount of the broadcasting fee and its due date are regulated by law. This means that you must pay the broadcasting fee even if you have not received a special payment request.

If you already pay the broadcasting fee for your main residence, you can exempt yourself from the broadcasting fee for the secondary residence. An exemption for the second or secondary residence is also possible if your spouse or registered partner pays the broadcasting fee for the main residence. You can register your secondary residence and, if necessary, also apply for exemption online.

You have already registered an existing apartment.

- You are the owner of a secondary or secondary residence.
- You live in the apartment.
- You are registered in the apartment or named in the rental contract.
- No broadcasting fee account exists for the apartment yet.
- No other person already pays a broadcasting fee for the secondary or secondary residence.

You must then pay the broadcasting fee for the registered apartment, unless you are exempt from paying the broadcasting fee for the secondary or secondary residence.

You must register the additional apartment in writing with the relevant office. To do this, fill out the form provided. It is usually available at your municipality. You can download it from the Internet or register online.

Online:

• Open the website www.rundfunkbeitrag.de.
• Click on the "All forms" field.
• In the "Register another home" section, click on "Fill out online" then the associated online form will open and guide you step-by-step through the process of registering your secondary home.

Postal:

• Call up the form for registering another apartment on the rundfunkbeitrag.de website in PDF format.
• Fill out the PDF form, print it out sign it and send it to the contribution service of ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio.

Telephone:

• Call the Contribution Service telephone hotline and go through the document with a contact person.

• The occupation of an apartment must be reported immediately.
• The exemption for a secondary residence is unlimited. It shall commence on the first of the month in which the requirements for exemption are met, if the application is submitted within three months of the requirements being met. If the application is made at a later date, the exemption shall commence on the first of the month in which the application is made.

The broadcasting fee replaced the license fee on January 1, 2013.

• A broadcasting fee must be paid for each additional apartment, regardless of how many persons of legal age live in this apartment.
• Another dwelling is e.g. a second home, secondary home or privately used vacation home.
• It does not matter whether and how many broadcasting devices are present.
• The broadcasting fee is 18.36 EUR per month for an additional apartment.
• One person registers the additional apartment. If there are several flatmates, the persons themselves decide who registers the further apartment.
• If someone moves into another apartment for which broadcasting fees are already paid, no registration is required.
• The additional apartment must be registered from the beginning of the month in which the additional apartment is occupied.
• The registration takes place at the contribution service of ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio; the registration can be done completely online.
• If you already pay the broadcasting fee for your main residence, you can exempt yourself from the broadcasting fee for the second or secondary residence. An exemption for the second or secondary residence is also possible if your spouse or registered partner pays the broadcasting fee for the main residence.
