If you are in possession of a residence permit for employment (gainful employment) and would like to change employer, this is possible under certain conditions.

If, as a foreign national, you are subject to an employment permit for a specific type of employment or a specific employer, you can have this employment requirement changed if you move to another company under certain conditions. To do this, you must submit a corresponding application to the relevant immigration authority. In most cases, the outcome is dependent on the approval of the Federal Employment Agency involved in the decision.

The required documents always refer to the respective change of employer. The requirements must be proven.

• If you would like to apply for a change of employment on your residence permit, you must first submit an application to your local immigration authority. Send a copy of your current residence permit with your application and describe which condition you would like to change and how.
• The foreigners authority will then tell you which documents they need from you.
• Then submit the required documents in full to your immigration office.
• The foreigners authority will then check your application and usually ask the Federal Employment Agency for approval.
• Once the examination has been completed, you will either receive an appointment, a new residence permit by post or a notification of rejection.

Note: The duration depends on the workload of the Foreigners' Registration Office and the Federal Employment Agency.

There are no deadlines, but you should consider applying for a new residence permit if your old one is only valid for a few months.
