If the data on your ID card is no longer up to date, you must have this changed as soon as possible.

The data on your ID card must always be up to date. You can apply for a new one from the ID card authority at your main place of residence. This is usually the Citizens' Registration Office.

You can also apply to any other ID card authority if you can provide an important reason. Please clarify the recognition of your reason in advance with the authority you have chosen. There is a surcharge for lack of jurisdiction. This means that you will have to pay more for your new ID card.

Although you do not need a new ID card if you change your address, you must still present it at the Citizens' Registration Office at your main place of residence. The authorities will note the new address on a sticker on the back of the ID card. They will also change the address in the chip on the ID card.

• Identity card, passport or children's passport or, if applicable, birth or marriage certificate
• Biometric passport photo: From May 1, 2025, only digitally available biometric photos will be used for new official documents. The photographs will either be taken at the authorities or by photographers. This means that citizens will no longer be able to bring their own photograph with them.

The identification requirement applies to you if you

• have German citizenship,
• have reached the age of 16 and
• are registered in Germany.

For applications outside your main place of residence:

• You must be able to provide an important reason why you are not applying for the ID card at the ID card authority at your main place of residence.

You must appear in person at the identity card office.

The change of address on your ID card will be made immediately.

A new ID card will be issued for all other changes. Collection is usually possible after 2 weeks.
