For the European elections, you will be entered on the electoral roll as a German citizen either ex officio or on application.
If you are a German citizen living in Germany and would like to vote in the European elections, you must first be entered in the electoral register. This
is either done automatically ex officio or you must submit an application.

You will be entered ex officio in the voters' register if you are on the 42nd day before the election,
- are German or German within the meaning of Article 116 paragraph 1 of the Basic Law,
- are at least 18 years old on election day,
- are not excluded from the right to vote,
- have your main residence or your sole residence in Germany or
- are a captain or
- are a crew member of a seagoing vessel flying the German flag or
- as a skipper of an inland waterway vessel registered in the German shipping register or
- are registered as a member of the relevant household or
- are registered at the address of a prison or similar institution in Germany.
You will be included in the electoral register upon application,
if you
- are German or German within the meaning of Article 116 Paragraph 1 of the Basic Law,
- are at least 18 years old on election day,
- are not excluded from the right to vote,
- have your habitual residence in Germany without a home or are in a prison without having been registered ex officio.
You can register as a German national as follows:
- You submit an informal application to the municipality responsible for you.
- The authority decides on the application and sends a voter's notification or a rejection notice.

- German or German within the meaning of Article 116 paragraph 1 of the Basic Law
- at least 18 years old on election day
- not excluded from the right to vote
- main residence or sole residence in Germany or
- captain or master or
- crew member for a seagoing vessel flying the German flag or
- skipper of an inland waterway vessel registered in the German shipping register or
- as a member of the relevant household or
- registered at the address of a prison or similar institution in Germany
- upon request:
- German or German within the meaning of Article 116 (1) of the Basic Law
- at least 18 years old on election day
- not excluded from the right to vote
- without a home, but habitually resident in Germany or in a prison, without being registered ex officio
- Responsible for the application: Municipality,
- in which you have a residence,
- in which you usually reside,
- in which the shipowner has his or her registered office,
- which is the home town of the inland vessel or
- in which the prison is located
