The aim of landscape conservation is the preservation and development of the landscape with its diversity and character, its habitats and its habitats of wild, native animal and plant species and their communities (see also Section 1 (2) to (4) of the Federal Nature Conservation Act).
The area of responsibility includes, in particular, measures for the maintenance, development, restoration and creation of near-natural habitats and habitats of native animal and plant species, their biotope network and historical cultural landscapes and parts of the landscape. Endangered species and habitats as well as measures in protected areas under nature conservation law are the focus of landscape conservation. The Free State of Thuringia primarily pursues a cooperative approach when implementing the measures: the aim is to secure the maintenance of valuable habitats through contractual agreements between owners or authorized users and the nature conservation administration (contractual nature conservation). The restoration and creation of new habitats is primarily supported by project funding.
