If the electronic proof of identity has been activated, the blocking must be initiated by the competent authority in the event of loss or theft of the identity card.
The blocking of the electronic proof of identity must be done in person or by telephone. When blocking, the personal data and the lock password must be provided.

- This is the responsibility of the municipality, joint municipality and city in which the residence is located or the authority that issued the ID card.
- Alternatively, the card can be blocked by calling the emergency number +49 116 116 (free of charge from the German landline and mobile network; available Monday to Sunday from midnight). The amount of the charges from abroad depends on the prices of the respective foreign provider/network operator.
