If you would like to have previous academic achievements recognised for your degree programme, you can submit an application to your current university. Under certain conditions, you can also apply for the recognition of competences acquired outside of higher education .

You can have credits from previous courses of study recognised in your current degree programme. This applies to academic achievements at your previous university, a university in Germany or abroad. This can be a change of subject within your university, a change of university within your degree programme, a change of university outside your degree programme or a stay abroad at a university.

You can also have non-university skills that you have gained during vocational training, for example, credited. These can be credited with a share of up to 50 percent of the services to be provided. Find out more about the details at your local university.

If you have passed the examinations at your previous university, you will be recognised if you have equivalence to your newly chosen course of study.

With the recognition of academic achievements or the recognition of knowledge acquired outside of the university, you may be able to be placed in a higher semester.

• Completed application for recognition of academic achievements or for recognition of competences acquired outside of higher education
• Proof of achievement, for example an overview of achievements or a transcript of records
• Description of the previous course content, for example a module description
• Documents for the recognition of achievements acquired outside of the university, for example certificates or certificates of practical experience
• Check with the respective university about the procedure and the required documents.

• You must be able to prove your previous academic achievements, for example in the form of equivalent achievements, certified by a recognised university.
• You can provide evidence of skills acquired outside of higher education in the form of certificates and other certificates of practice.
• The university to which you submitted the application for recognition or credit transfer will review and decide on the application.

The exact procedure depends on the respective university. In principle, recognition or crediting takes place in the following steps:

Find out about the recognition and transfer procedure at your university, and ask for advice if necessary.

Submit the application and submit the required supporting documents.

The university will review your application. In the case of recognition, the equivalence of your previous academic achievements will be checked. In this context, the following are compared: content, learning outcomes, competences; level, for example, Bachelor's or Master's; the amount of time or the amount of work required, expressed in ECTS credits. The qualification or course profile of the previous course of study and the recognition of the former educational institution also play a role in the examination. If equivalence is determined, recognition is granted.

Credits for non-university competences can be granted with a share of up to 50 percent of the credits to be acquired.

If any uncertainties arise during the examination of your application, the university may contact you with questions.

After the examination, the university will inform you of the decision on recognition or recognition and, if necessary, place you in a higher semester.

The processing time depends on the respective university and the specific request.

There is no statutory processing deadline.

The application for recognition of academic achievements or recognition of competences acquired outside of higher education is regulated by each university itself.

Prior information from lecturers or counselling centres of the universities is not legally binding.

An objection can be lodged with the responsible examination board of the university.
