In Lower Saxony, special educational support is provided in special schools and in all other general schools. Special educational needs are assumed to exist for children and young people whose educational, developmental and learning opportunities are so impaired that they cannot be adequately supported in lessons at mainstream schools without special educational support. Therapeutic and social support from other extracurricular providers may also be necessary.

Due to the need for appropriate and effective support in special areas, based on the impairments or disabilities of the pupils, the special schools are differentiated as follows:

  • Special school with a focus on emotional and social development,
  • Special school with a focus on intellectual development,
  • Special school with a focus on hearing (hearing impaired, deaf),
  • Special school with a focus on physical and motor development,
  • Special school with a focus on learning,
  • Special school with a focus on vision (visually impaired, blind),
  • Special school with a focus on language,
  • Special school with a focus on hearing/vision (deaf-blind).

As a support center, the special school also supports integration in general schools through education and teaching, counseling, therapy, support and care. This is achieved through the deployment of special school teachers and, in individual cases, educational assistants or support staff. The scope and duration of the assignment depends on the special educational requirements. As part of their work at the support center, the teachers are deployed in basic special education, in integration classes, in the mobile service or in a cooperation class at the general school.
