For each electoral district, an official electoral register is kept by the municipality. As a general rule, persons entitled to vote (EU nationals only if certain conditions are met) who are registered with their main residence on the 42nd day before the election are entered ex officio in the voters' register and receive a voter's notification no later than the 21st day before the election.
If you have not received a voter's notification by the 21st day before the election, you should immediately check with your municipality whether you are registered on the electoral roll. If this is not the case, you can apply for registration.
EU nationals who have not been officially entered in the electoral roll can submit a written application to the municipal electoral authority no later than the 21st day before the election (§ 17 a EuWO). Since the election notification cards are regularly sent well before the 21st day before the election, you should check with the municipal election authority from the 30th day before the election if you do not receive the election notification.
If you have a different situation, e.g. moving to the municipality after the 42nd day before the election, please contact the municipal election authority immediately.
All Germans who are eligible to vote on election day
- have reached the age of eighteen,
- have been living in Germany or in other EU countries for at least three months, and
- are not excluded from the right to vote.
All nationals of an EU member state who occupy a residence in the Federal Republic of Germany and who are resident on election day are also entitled to vote.
- have reached the age of eighteen
- have been living in the Federal Republic of Germany or an EU member state for at least three months, and
- are not excluded from the right to vote.
It makes sense for Germans and EU citizens to check with the municipal electoral authority from .dem about 30 days before the election whether you are registered on the voters' register. If this is not the case, the authority will explain the necessary steps to you.
You can apply for registration on the electoral roll no later than the 21st day before the election.
