To apply for a birth certificate, you will need:

• Your identity card or passport (if requested in writing: certified copy),
• in the case of application or collection by a representative: written authorization of the authorized person, his/her identity card or passport (original or certified copy) and the identity card or passport of the representative,
  for other persons, where applicable, proof of their legal interest.

Civil status certificates contain personal data, so their issuance is subject to data protection restrictions.

Eligible applicants (minimum age: 16 years):

• the person to whom the birth certificate refers
• the spouse or civil partner (within the meaning of the Registered Partnership Act)
• Ancestors and descendants of the data subject
• Siblings with a legitimate interest

Other persons, including close relatives such as aunts and uncles, will only receive a document if they can credibly demonstrate a legal interest (for example, by means of a letter from the probate court).

There are fees for the issuance of a birth certificate:

First copy: 10 €

If you apply for each additional copy at the same time: 5 € each

Personal application:

• Go to the registry office that certified the birth.
• You will need to present your identity card or passport for legitimation.
• As a rule, you pay the fee when you apply at the registry office.
   

In addition to you, a person you trust may also order and pick up the certificate for you. In addition to a written power of attorney, it must present your identity card or passport (original or certified copy) as well as your own identity card or passport.

Application by mail or fax:

• Send an informal letter to the responsible registry office with a request to issue you a birth certificate.
• Your letter should include the following information:
  • Surname, first name
  • Date and place of birth
  • Surname, first name of parents
  • if known: registry office and notarization number

• Include a certified copy of your ID card or passport with the letter.
   

When you send the certificate, you will receive a fee notice.
