The number of prospective students in Germany exceeds the number of available study places. Through central coordination, Hochschulstart ensures that each applicant receives only one study place and that all available study places are allocated.

The following degree programs are subject to nationwide admission restrictions:

• Medicine
• veterinary medicine
• Dentistry
• Pharmacy

If you are interested in one of these degree programs, you must apply to Hochschulstart. You cannot apply directly to the university.

Hochschulstart will use the documents submitted to check whether you can be offered a place and will provide you with comprehensive advice on the allocation of study places.

• Required Documents:
  • Certified copy of the university entrance qualification (e.g. high school diploma)
  • Proof of
    • aptitude tests
    • completed vocational training
    • Professional activities
    • Voluntary services

  You can find out which documents are required in your case on the application form.

• You have a university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur)
• You meet the individual requirements for the degree program (e.g. Abitur grade)

You must put your applications in the desired order in the application portal. The applications will be forwarded to the universities. You may have to submit further documents to the universities. Hochschulstart or the universities will rank the applicants. Depending on your position on the ranking list, you will receive an offer of admission that you can accept. If you do not want to accept the offer yet, you can wait and see whether you receive an offer with your other applications.

Lower-ranking offers are automatically eliminated from the process.

At the end of the procedure, you will then receive a place for the best possible offer.

For a winter semester, you must apply online by July 15. You can submit written documents by July 21.

If you have received your university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur) before January 16 of the year of your application, you must apply by May 31 and can submit written documents by June 15.

For a summer semester, you must apply online by January 15. You can submit written documents by January 21.
