As a student of human medicine, you must complete a three-month nursing service before registering for the first part of the medical examination.

Medical students must complete a three-month nursing service at a hospital or a rehabilitation facility with a comparable level of care before starting their studies or during the non-teaching periods of their studies before registering for the first part of the medical examination. Its purpose is to introduce students to the operation and organization of a hospital and to familiarize them with the usual nursing activities. Nursing service can be performed for one month at a time.

Nursing service abroad must be credited by the LPA. The proof must be submitted in the original and a copy in German or English. Certificates in other languages are to be translated by a sworn interpreter. A nursing internship in Austria cannot be recognised.

Students at the University of Hamburg send the required proof in the original and a simple copy to the LPA.
Students at the Medical School Hamburg upload the necessary evidence online when registering for the first section of the medical examination.

Possibilities of crediting nursing activities to the nursing service:
1. in the medical service of the Bundeswehr or in comparable facilities,
2. as part of a voluntary social year,
3. as part of the Federal Volunteer Service,
4. as part of community service.
5. Successfully completed training as a midwife or midwife, paramedic, emergency paramedic, in nursing, pediatric nursing or geriatric care, as well as successfully completed state-regulated training of at least one year in nursing assistance or geriatric care.

You can raise an objection to a negative decision within one month of notification at the office specified in the letterhead.
