Have you completed further training abroad to become a specialist dentist? Then you can apply for recognition as a specialist dentist in Germany.
The profession of specialist dentist is regulated in Germany. This means that you need a permit if you want to use the title “specialist dentist” for your specialization in the federal state you have chosen. With your training as a specialist dentist, you have acquired a medical specialization to qualify as a dentist abroad.
To work as a dentist in Germany, you first need a license or a professional permit. In order to work as a specialist dentist in Germany, you must also apply for recognition of your further training as a specialist dentist. This allows you to use the title “specialist dentist” in your respective specialization.
You may only use the title for your specialization if there is a corresponding further training title in Germany.

- First, submit your application and the required documents to the dental association of the state in which you want to work.
- If necessary, you will be asked to provide missing documents.
- The responsible body will check whether your professional qualification is equivalent. The professional qualification is equivalent if there are no significant differences between your foreign professional qualification and the German professional qualification.
- If your qualification as a specialist dentist is recognized, you can work in this profession in Germany. You will receive a notification.
- You will receive an explanation.
- You can take a compensatory measure to prove the missing knowledge.
- If you successfully complete the compensatory measure, you will receive recognition. You will then be allowed to use the title “specialist dentist” for your specialization.
You will receive confirmation of receipt within one month of submitting your application. The responsible authority will inform you if any documents are missing. A decision will be made on your application no later than three months after receipt of your complete documents. The deadline can be extended by one month.
