If you would like to use the professional title “nurse” or “nursing specialist”, you must apply for a permit. You can find out more here.
The work of a nurse is regulated in Germany.
In order to work as a nurse in Germany, you must apply for a state permit. With this permit, you are allowed to use the job title “nurse” and work in the profession.
- Copy of the certificate or notice confirming the equivalence of the foreign professional qualification
- Certificate of good conduct (does not need to be brought with you, just apply for it at the city administration)
- If applicable, criminal records from all countries in which you have resided within the last 5 years,
- Medical certificate stating that you are not unfit to practice the profession due to health reasons
- Confirmation of having the knowledge of the German language required to carry out the professional activity (certificate of acquisition of language skills at least level B2)
- Proof of identity if applicable
- You have successfully completed your state examination in Hamburg.
- You have not been guilty of conduct that renders you unreliable for the exercise of your profession.
- You are not unsuitable for the exercise of the profession in terms of health.
- You have the knowledge of the German language required for the exercise of your professional activity.
- You submit your application together with the necessary documents to the responsible authority.
- The responsible authority will check your application for completeness and, if necessary, request any missing documents or information from you.
- The responsible authority will check whether you meet all the requirements.
- If you meet all the requirements, you will be granted permission. Otherwise, you will receive a rejection notice.
- You will also receive a fee notice.
- You pay the fees.
You may not begin the activity until you have received permission.
You can raise an objection to a negative decision within one month of notification at the office specified in the letterhead.
