Would you like to adopt a child from within the country? Then you must first qualify as an adoptive parent.
The aim of an adoption is to find the most suitable parents for a child who, for various reasons, cannot grow up with his or her biological parents.
That is why adoption agencies carefully examine your suitability as potential adoptive parents. This includes, for example, the reasons for the adoption, the stability of your relationship or health aspects.
Documents must be submitted to determine suitability. What these documents are will be discussed with you in advance during a consultation.
Basic requirements if you want to adopt a child in your country:
- You have unlimited legal capacity under German law.
- You are at least 25 years old.
- If you are married, at least one of the spouses must be 25 years of age.
- The younger spouse must be at least 21 years old.
- According to the Federal Association of State Youth Welfare Offices, the age difference between adoptive parents and adopted child should correspond to a natural distance.
- You apply for an adoption at the adoption agency responsible for you. This can either be your youth welfare office or a recognized non-governmental adoption agency.
- The responsible agency will check your suitability. The specialists at the placement agency will talk to you to find out more about you.
- Adoption is only possible after a positive suitability test.
- Even after a positive aptitude test, there is no legal right to have a child placed.
- A married couple can only adopt a child together.
- Single people can adopt a child.
- There is no maximum age for adoption.
