If your rental car permit has expired, you can apply for a renewal. Here you can find out what requirements must be met and what documents are required.

Re-issuing a rental car permit is necessary if your previous permit has expired or been revoked. You must submit an application and the relevant authority will check the requirements and decide on your application.
There can then be a seamless transition of the approved rental car operation on the basis of a new, again temporary, permit.

• Application for reissuance of rental car permit with:
  • Surname, first name of the applicant
  • residence and place of business
  • birthday, place of birth
  • Number of vehicles, vehicle type and capacity of the vehicles used
• equity certificate / additional certificate
• Certificate of clearance:
  • the tax office
  • the community
  • the social insurance provider and the professional association,
• certificate of good conduct
• Extract from the Central Trade Register (for companies)
• Extract from the Driving Aptitude Register (FAER)

General documents:

• vehicle list
• Proof of liability insurance for rental cars including risk code (WKZ)
• Proof of installation of an alarm system or special permit
• Proof of installation of an odometer

The applicant is or was already in possession of a rental car permit as an entrepreneur.
The safety and efficiency of the company are guaranteed.
There are no facts to suggest that the applicant is unreliable as an entrepreneur or as the person appointed to manage the business.
The applicant as an entrepreneur or the person appointed to manage the business is professionally qualified.
The applicant and the entrepreneurs commissioned by him or her to provide transport services have their place of business or branch within the meaning of commercial law in Germany.
In the case of legal entities under public law, the requirements are deemed to be met.

The amount of the fees depends on the number of vehicles and the duration of the permit.

Submit an appropriate application to the transport authority responsible for you and attach all necessary documents to the application.
The authority will examine your application and carry out the necessary hearing procedures.
You will receive a notification of the decision to reissue your rental car permit. If applicable, you will be given the permit certificate.

Processing times may vary between the relevant transport authorities.

Deadlines only begin to run when an application is submitted that is ready for a decision. If your application is complete, a decision will be made within 3 months. The deadline can be extended by 3 months if necessary.
Before your temporary permit expires, you can apply to the responsible transport authority for a renewal of the permit.
Your proof of clearance certificates from the tax office, the municipality, the social insurance provider and the professional association must not be older than 3 months.
Your proof of equity certificate / additional certificate must not be older than 3 months.
The renewed granting of the permit is limited to a period of up to 5 years.

Before the temporary approval of your rental car permit expires, you can apply to the responsible traffic authority for a renewal of the permit.
The processing time of your application may depend on whether all documents relevant to the decision have been submitted or whether additional documents are required.
Your proof of clearance certificates from the tax office, the municipality, the social insurance provider and the professional association are required by the company, the legal representative and the person appointed to manage the business/traffic management.
