Would you like your child to change to a secondary school?

Would you like your child to change to a grammar school? You can apply for this at the school under certain conditions.

In the 4th grade, guardians receive a recommendation for the type of school. In Hamburg, this is the recommendation for the district school or for the grammar school. The school career recommendation is not binding. You can also enroll your child in a different type of school.

Before the end of the observation phase (at the end of grade 6), it is examined whether the student should continue to attend the chosen type of school or change school type, taking into account the student's level of performance, the support measures previously implemented by the school and the expected development.

• In order to transfer from year 6 of the district school to year 7 of the grammar school, the requirements of Section 13 Paragraph 1 APO-GrundStGy must be met: at least a grade of "good" in the certificate in German, mathematics and English, at least a grade of "good" in the average of all other subjects and a worse grade in no more than two subjects.
• For transfer to Gymnasium after year 7 (proof of knowledge of a second foreign language over 4 years, from year 7 up to and including year 10)

The transfer to a grammar school must always be applied for at the previous school.

The legal guardians submit the application to the school the child has previously attended.

There is a central registration procedure for enrolling in secondary school (year 5).

The dates are announced annually by the secondary schools.

You will receive more detailed information about registration dates and the timetable directly from the respective school.

For the central procedures (transition to year 5 of the grammar school and the district school and change to year 7 of the district school), the deadlines are announced separately each year.

For all other grades, the deadline for changing to a new school year is May 31 of each year.

There are no clues or special features.

• The school supervisory authority in the authority decides on changes of school type in grades 5 to 10
• The head teacher decides on a change of school type to the preparatory stage of the upper secondary school or to the study stage (§ 35 Training and Examination Regulations for the Acquisition of the General University Entrance Qualification “APO-AH”)
