Would you like to extend your residence permit?

If the Migration Office has issued your residence permit, you will automatically receive an appointment from us to extend it. In the invitation letter you will find all the necessary information and which documents you need to bring with you. This means that you do not have to make an appointment yourself!

Please note that this regulation does not apply to the transfer of residence permits. You can find more information on this in the service "New national passport: Transfer of residence permit".

A temporary residence permit must be extended if you wish to stay in Germany beyond its expiry date. A personal visit to the Migration Office is required for the extension. To make the process as easy as possible for you, we will automatically send you an appointment for the extension. In the invitation letter you will find all the information about the requirements and which documents you need to bring with you. This means that you do not have to make an appointment yourself.

However, you must bring all the documents specified in the invitation letter with you, as you must also prove that you meet the requirements when extending your residence permit. Otherwise, your residence permit cannot be extended.

We will inform you about the costs for the extension of the residence permit in our invitation letter.

In good time before your old residence permit expires, you will receive an invitation by post for the appointment to check whether the requirements for extending your residence permit are met. You must bring all the documents specified in the invitation letter with you to this appointment.

If something has changed in your life situation that could affect the extension of your residence permit, you must also inform us of this and provide evidence if necessary. Therefore, please also bring documents that we have not requested but which could be important for the decision on the extension of your residence permit. These could be, for example

• Documents relating to your family situation, if this has changed,
• current decisions from other authorities regarding your personal situation,
• current medical certificates if you are unable to work for health reasons.

If you are unable to attend the appointment, please send us an e-mail to the address given in the invitation letter requesting another appointment. However, we would like to point out that in such a case we cannot guarantee that your residence permit can be extended in time for the expiry date. We therefore strongly advise you to keep the appointment sent to you.

A decision on the extension of the residence permit will be made at the appointment when we have received all the necessary documents. We will then send you the residence permit itself by registered post, see eAT/Electronic residence permit.
