Elementary school in Bremerhaven comprises school years 1 to 4.
School attendance is compulsory for your child. In the state of Bremen, your child will generally start school when he or she turns 6 years old by June 30 of a given year.
Children who turn 6 in the period from July 1 to September 30 of the year can also register their child for school enrollment within the registration period (waiting period child).
Parents/guardians first receive a notification of enrollment from the authorities. You must then register your child at the relevant elementary school.
Assignment to the enrolment school is based on the catchment area determined for each elementary school by the municipality of Bremerhaven.
Children who turn 6 years old by June 30 of a given year are required to attend school on August 1 of that year. Children who are required to attend school can only be deferred for one year for "serious health reasons". The decision is made by the specialist supervisor on the basis of a school doctor's report
Children who turn 6 in the period from July 1 to September 30 of a given year can apply for compulsory schooling. Parents/guardians must submit this application within the registration period. A school doctor's report will check whether this is good for the child. It may be decided to defer the child for another year.
Children who turn 6 in the period from October 1 of one year to January 31 of the following year can also apply for compulsory schooling. A school doctor's report is used to check whether this is good for the child. It is checked whether the child's linguistic, cognitive and social skills will not be overtaxed by the lessons and the rest of school life.
The legal guardians receive a school enrollment notification from the authorities. Compulsory school attendance begins for all children who turn 6 years old by June 30 of the year and also for all children who turn 6 years old in the period from July 1 to September 30 of the year (maternity leave child). The registration of children on maternity leave is binding. If no registration is made during the registration period, the parental leave child is deemed not to have been registered.
All children must be registered at the relevant elementary school. Assignment to the registration school is based on the catchment area determined for each elementary school by the municipality of Bremerhaven.
If your child is to be enrolled at a public elementary school other than the enrolment school, you must submit an application for enrolment at another elementary school to your enrolment school during the enrolment period, together with the relevant supporting documents.
If your child has a recognized special educational need, please inform the school when registering.
If you register your child at a private elementary school, you must still register at the public elementary school responsible for you. If your child is enrolled at a private elementary school and you do not need a place at a public elementary school, please submit a waiver form. You can obtain the relevant form from the private elementary school.
In the case of elementary school which, due to the large number of children in the defined catchment area, could enter the procedure with a surplus of applications (more children than school places), it is important that you also complete and sign the application for admission to the enrolment school and add supporting documents so that it can be guaranteed that your child can be admitted to the enrolment school.
